1LT Matt
Offiler
U.S. Army

Matt is from Cape Cod, Hyannis to be exact.
"I am 24 and have two younger (not smaller)
brothers.. somehow I got the short gene ( and
I'm still 6ft tall!) Andrew is 21 and Tim is 17.
I don't have any kids, not married. I'm
stationed out of Ft. Riley, KS with 4IBCT, 1st
Infantry Division. My home is in Hyannis though
where my parents live.
I joined the military after college.. I took the
long road to a commission though. I went to
Norwich University in VT (which is the oldest
private military college, and no one has ever
heard of it) with the plan to commission in a
branch. I didn't really care which one. I ended
up taking Army ROTC while I was there but my
parents made me promise to wait until I
graduated until I decided if I was going in the
military, just in case I changed my mind.
About a month before graduating in May 04, I
called a recruiter and told her I wanted to be
an Army officer. She set me up to go to basic
training that fall and then to Officer Candidate
School following that. I graduated and
commissioned in April 05 and ended up Field
Artillery. Now I'm in Iraq basically serving as
an Infantry platoon leader for 24 soldiers in my
platoon. My platoon holds two records in our BN..
we went the most patrols with consistent small
arms fire attacks (our first 6 weeks we didn't
go a single patrol without a fire fight or
getting shot at of some kind).. and we went the
longest without getting hit with an IED, which
we broke at the end of May when we finally
caught one. Its not that we didnt see it, we
just couldnt see it because it was buried under
a dirt road. Fortunately none of my guys were
hurt.
