7/20/05

The July packages (4 of them!) went out yesterday, filled with lots of good stuff for Laurie and the rest of the guys.  Here is what we sent:  magazines, 8 lbs Dunkin Donuts coffee, Coffeemate flavored, 2 frisbees, basketball, football, soccer ball, wet ones, Oreos, Fig Newtons, Goldfish crackers, lots and lots of candy that won't melt, gum, tic tacs, 7 bottles of sun screen

  • Special mention to St Peter's Elementary School in Warwick who wrote cards and drew pictures that were sent over with this package.  The drawings were incredible and the letters were very heartfelt and sincere. I am sure that Laurie and the other soldiers are going to have their spirits lifted.

  • We were also lucky enough to get some very cute drawings from Washington Park Pre-School.  The kids were adorable and hopefully Laurie will use the drawings to decorate the common area.

  • We also had one more round of fantastic letters from Laurel Hill School who were lucky enough to have a visit from Colonel Gallogly about 6 weeks ago.

We sent over 4 separate packages this month, partly because we had so many magazines collected.  Thanks to everyone who saved their magazines - we had a large assortment of many types of magazines which was the goal.  It saved us a lot of money, as we only spent $48 on the newest magazines like Maxim, Time & FHM.  Keep saving your magazines for collection for the August package.

The unbelievable news is that we've passed the $2500 mark for our donations. You guys are awesome!  The not so great news is that our "Pot" is at its lowest total... $90.  So, if you know someone who wants to donate, now's the time to pass on the information.  Thanks everyone.

8/8/05 - Our July packages have been received and are being enjoyed.  Check out the email from Laurie below.  Click on the picture for a better view of it.

Hi Kristin,

I am so sorry for not replying to your previous e-mail....I have been very busy. The soldiers here in country more than 1 year are allowed to go on 15 days of R&R (Rest & Recuperation) leave. Well, our Battalion Executive Officer went on his R&R so I have been filling in for him. I have been very, very busy.  This is of course in addition to my own job and...flying!

We did get the July packages and they were greatly appreciated. The sports balls went QUICK! Funny thing, when the mail clerks picked up the mail that day and saw your boxes, they thought I ordered stuff from Pottery Barn for my trailer here! HA! I laughed so hard, because Pottery Barn is one of my favorite stores. I shared the oreos (even though I secretly didn't want to), and the candy and coffee is always a big hit. We are in the midst of a big sand storm. Everything looks brown, smells like dirt and feels like grit. YUCK!

I am going to try to attach a picture of me and the crew I was flying with the other day. It was a big day for my Colonel, since he broke the 3,000 hour mark. He is a good guy and asked me to fly with him on his big day which was a treat. I also have a disc full of cool pictures to send off to you, along with a disposable camera I have been carrying around..who knows what will be on it. I will get those out as soon as I can.

As far as the "Blessing of the Fleet" goes, I lost track of time and mentioned it to Tom. Told him that you were going to be there..blah, blah, well he says...that was last night...too bad we missed it. OOPS! I have no concept of time over here. I just know that summer is almost over and for the third year in a row...I will miss my daughters first day of school. I missed Kindergarten because I had given birth to my son, TJ the day before (by C-section), then last year the Army screwed up 1st Grade, now 2nd will be missed again!

Again, I am sorry for not writing, but it is getting painfully difficult to sound upbeat, after 8 months of this. I just keep reminding myself that it is almost over. We appreciate all of your thoughts and packages, and everything you are doing for us. We will try to think of some way to show you our appreciation!

:)
