Here is Art's email (sent 4/2) and picture with the guys and the Girl Scout cookies:

Kristin,

Thank you for the email.  I will send Betsy an email tomorrow but I wanted you to see the picture we took for her today with the Girl Scout cookies.  This is at the airport in Baghdad with Saddam's big terminal in the background.  It was 45 degrees celcius today which is over 110 F.  It was miserable but I hope the kids will see that we got the treats.

By the way, I'm a bigger hockey fan than a baseball fan but yes I do like the Sox.  Get rid of that left fielder though.  I don't like him.  Bad example for the kids.  Life isn't the same though without the NHL.  In the world of sports, I'm a pure hockey guy.

Talk to you soon.  I need to serious rest at the moment.

Laurie's first email to us (sent 4/14):

Hi Kristin,

Art told me you would be in touch. He had dropped of some of your goodies on one of his trips up "North" and we really enjoyed it. He is a wonderful guy and always thinking of others. It is like Christmas when we get a box of good stuff. He has told me that you are doing a wonderful job of keeping the troops well supplied. The weather has started to "heat up" over here. That makes some things difficult to ship (chocolate especially). I gave him some suggestion in his last e-mail which I believe he passed along. We have a common area in our mail room where we share all of the extra goodies people receive. There is a book section, some board games, snacks, as well as the usual personal hygeine supplies. We also have a few school classes that send us art projects and letters (my daughter's 1st grade class included) and we post the pictures and letters on the walls of the mail room for everyone to enjoy. We are making the best of our situation.

My unit has about 20 females. They range in age and rank from young privates to me, the crusty old Captain. We are an aviation unit so there are three of us that are piolts. I really enjoy flying. Flying here is different every day. Some days the people are so friendly, waving and smiling, with the children running after out helicopters. And then there are the other days (we'll just leave it at that). Overall, I believe the Iraqi people are happy we are here and are grateful for our help. We have approximately 250 soldiers total in our unit.

So you know, there are some ammenities here. Just not very practical and accessible. There is a small Px (military store) on the other side of base, as well as a Burger King and Pizza Hut, which I have yet to go to. The Dining Facility works hard to keep us well fed. It's just that there is only so much they can do to feed the masses of soldiers. After a while, it all tastes the same.

I hope this is helpful and we look forward to hearing from you. We appreciate all that you are doing to keep our spirits up while we are away from home.

Laurie
